history of Channing Memorial Church Channing Memorial Church was founded to provide a liberal religious atmosphere in which individuals may search for truth and meaning in an environment steeped in the richness of our Unitarian Universalist roots and heritage. Read more about our church history. Annual Report 2006 (in pdf) The history of Unitarian Universalism Both Unitarianism and Universalism grew out of the Jewish and Christian traditions. Unitarianism as an organized movement can actually trace its roots to liberal religion in Transylvania in the 16th century, during the Reformation. As its name implies, Unitarians believed in the unity of God and also in the inherent goodness of people. Universalist theology had English roots and, as its name implies, Universalists believed in a universal salvation for all. Read more about Unitarian Universalist history.
