Children and Youth Religious Education
Every parent knows, young hands and minds learn best when they can be active. At Channing, you will find a Religious Education curriculum that encourages children—from preschoolers through middle school—to be active and involved as they learn about Unitarian Universalism.
Your child may learn about values and ethics, perhaps gain a sense of transcending mystery and wonder on a nature hike. He/she may plant flowers, or take a role in one of the special intergenerational events several times a year.
Stories, games and projects encourage preschoolers to honor themselves, their religious community, nature and cultures from around the world. Children in grades k-5 experience a youth-based worship service in the monthly Children’s Chapel.
As your child progresses in his/ her spiritual journey, there will be opportunities to:
- Excite and embrace children’s inherent sense of wonder and learn about the mystery that some people call God. Hear Bible stories.
- Celebrate earth and all her creatures, investigate the meaning of UU principles and “meet” some ancestors who developed and lived their faith. Learn about other major world religions.
- Move from childhood into adolescence through the Coming of Age program, which provides a community of friends and experiences to help the young people learn about themselves and define their beliefs.
High school students organize and lead their own program, with support from advisors. They are invited to attend worship services on the second Sunday of each month, followed by group discussion led by Rev. LaMar. They may become teachers and assistants, sing in the choir or play an instrument, or serve on church committees.
