“Emerson and the Transcendentalists: Their Unitarian Legacy” with Jim Caldiero
Transcendentalism, the first literary and philosophical movement of our young nation, grew out of dissatisfaction with a Unitarian religion that some young ministers saw as becoming too “conservative.” Today, transcendentalism’s impact on Unitarian Universalism is widespread, its ideas incorporated into many of our principles and purposes.
About Jim Caldiero: Born in New York City, Jim did undergraduate and graduate studies in public administration at the City University of New York and NYU. After working for Mayor John Lindsay, he joined the Social Security Administration where he served on the senior staff, directing the agency’s software testing activities. He has been active in UU social justice serving as the National Co-Chair of the UU Service Committee’s Volunteer Network. He currently serves as the lead advocate for immigration reform with the UU Legislative Ministry of Maryland. Married to his wonderful wife, Dorothy, they reside in Ellicott City.
