“Enduring Hope” with Rev. Jane Bennett Smith
Beyond the commercialization of bunnies and eggs, what is Easter truly about? Hope. This Sunday, we explore the historical impact of the Easter story—how the story of resurrection gave rise to a narrative of enduring strength and renewal that has sustained a people of faith. In connecting this ancient story to the present day, we consider the timeless wisdom it offers. Through a meditation on hope and reflections on hope from modern-day Christians, we explore its enduring impact.
An Easter Ritual
Easter is a story of profound and enduring hope. It reminds us that suffering and loss need not be the end of the story, but can be a beginning. Even from deep devastation, something new—something sacred—can emerge. As the budding trees and the first crocuses of the spring emerge in our gardens, we see this promise unfolding around us. The earth, once crusty and brown, transforms into shades of green and white. This is an embodiment of life after dormancy, of renewal after death. In the colors of spring we see a reflection of the new life in the tale of Easter
Let us gather to honor this transformation through ritual. I invite each of you to create a flower and bring it with you to church. Perhaps tissue paper, pipe cleaners, watercolors, or crayons will inspire your creation. Just as the flowers in our gardens emerge from the earth full of new life, so too will your creations Easter Sunday—each one a visual of hope, beauty, and becoming.
