“Holding Sorrow, Holding Beauty” with Rev. Jane Bennett Smith
This is a season to reflect upon grief and ancestry, as traditions around the world honor the dead through observances such as Halloween, Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), Samhain, and All Souls’ Day. So let us honor this sacred season.
Grief and mourning are universal parts of the human experience, yet that universality does nothing to lessen the poignancy of our own losses. How do we navigate the deeply personal journey of healing when death brings sorrow to our bodies, minds, and spirits? How do we make room for lament alongside gratitude, for sorrow alongside beauty, and for the pain of loss alongside the love that remains? Together, we will reflect on the many ways we grieve and discover how we might hold both grief and gratitude as we find our way forward.
This Sunday is our annual Ancestor Tree ritual. Together, we will write personal notes to loved ones we have lost on colorful leaves, adorning a bare tree with color, memories, and words of love. Through this ritual, we make space to remember those who remain forever in our hearts.
